About Lonnie Scott
“Representatives in the Michigan Legislature make decisions everyday that have an impact on the lives of working men and women and their families. I am running for office because I know that I can be a strong voice for the people of the 54th district and represent the interest of the average citizen. The experience I have gained working in state government makes me more conscious of the way that the bureaucratic and institutional problems affect local residents. I will be a voice for our community, I will be a voice for YOU.”
Lonnie grew up in Ypsilanti Township and attended Lincoln schools for his entire K-12 education. Growing up in a single parent family taught Lonnie personal responsibility and courage at a young age. He also learned from his mom that no matter how tough things get, together we can make it through. Lonnie has adopted that optimistic approach to his life and believes that though the residents of the 54th district are facing hard times, if we work together we can make things better for all of us.
Lonnie’s grandfather journeyed from the coal mines of Kentucky to the auto plants in Ypsilanti allowing his family to set-up a permanent residence with the majority of Lonnie’s family finding work in the auto industry. These deep union roots have cemented Lonnie’s thoughts that hard working people, need hard-working, progressive leaders to continue the fight for a decent working wage, adequate health care and quality education.
Lonnie graduated from Central Michigan University in 2005 and currently serves as a legislative aide for State Representative Alma Wheeler Smith. His experience in Lansing ranges from the State budget to the MI Future tuition and pre-school package as well as many other legislative initiatives and programs. Lonnie’s experience in Lansing means that he will be able to hit the ground running when he gets to the Michigan Legislature. Lonnie also works as a leadership trainer and public speaker, traveling to college campuses around the country, training students in ethical decision-making and leadership.
Lonnie is committed to carrying on the tradition of strong leadership and sound policy decisions that the 54th district has become accustom to. Lonnie will focus his efforts on sensible education policy, the economic resurgence of the 54th district, and fiscal responsibility in Lansing. He will be an ally to the LGBT, Environmental and Pro-Labor communities and will fight to advance progressive ideals and policy.
Lonnie is an active member of the Michigan Democratic party and serves as the Youth Caucus Events Coordinator. Lonnie also serves as the chair of the Youth committee for the 15th Congressional District Democrats. Lonnie has worked on numerous democratic campaigns including the recent Obama for America Campaign and many local races.
Lonnie and his wife Heather live in Ypsilanti Township and have recently welcomed the birth of their first child.
