YPSILANTI – Lonnie Scott announced today that he had received the endorsement of the Michigan Education Association (MEA) in his campaign for the 54th district State House of Representatives seat.
“From the day I entered this race, education has been a top priority. Making early-childhood through higher education a priority in the State of Michigan is the key to Michigan’s economic resurgence, and as Representative I will ensure that schools have the resources they need to best serve Michigan’s students,” said Scott.
The MEA is a self-governing education association, representing more than 157,000 teachers, faculty and education support staff throughout the state.
“I understand the role educators play in helping our students prepare for the future because I know how important they were for me personally. Attending Lincoln schools, there were several teachers that were particularly instrumental to my education and growth, and without them, I question where I would be today,” added Scott. “That makes this endorsement particularly meaningful for me. I am honored to have the endorsement of the MEA and look forward to working with them to make education a top priority for the State of Michigan.”
Scott also announced the endorsement of Ypsilanti Township Trustee Mike Martin.
“I am honored to have the support of Trustee Martin. He worked extremely hard to win his seat among a crowded field of candidates in 2008. I admire the energy he has shown as a public servant and welcome him as a valued member of our team.”
As the race for the 54th District heats up Scott adds the MEA and Martin to a growing list of endorsements, which include the UAW and current 54th District Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith. Scott is one of six Democrats seeking the Democratic Party’s nomination to replace Rep. Smith in the August 3rd primary election.

YPSILANTI – Today, Lonnie Scott announced that his campaign had picked up two more major endorsements – the UAW and the 15th Congressional District Democratic Organization – in his bid for the Democratic Party nomination for the 54th district State Representative seat. Scott is one of six candidates in a heavily contested primary to replace current State Representative Alma Wheeler Smith. Rep. Smith, who has also endorsed Scott, cannot seek reelection due to term limits.
“I’m honored to receive these endorsements. Most of my family has worked in local auto plants, so my whole life I’ve witnessed firsthand the results of the UAW’s tireless efforts on behalf of local families. The UAW has been a crucial force in fighting for the people of the 54th district,” said Scott. “These endorsements, along with the endorsement of Rep. Smith, show confidence in the work I’ve done for the hardworking families the 54th district, work I will continue as our next State Representative, and for that I’m deeply grateful.”
Scott, who grew up in Ypsilanti Township, has served as Rep. Alma Smith’s legislative director in the State
House for the past two years, and is the only candidate running with experience in the state’s appropriations and budget process, experience he says will serve him well as the 54th district’s next Representative.
“I think my experience makes me uniquely qualified to be a leader in the House from day one, and to represent the people of my district effectively. Term limits have devastated our legislature’s ability to retain the institutional knowledge that is crucial to passing legislation that will move our state forward. I have that knowledge and experience, and in this troubled economic environment, we don’t’ have time for on-the-job training,” said Scott. “I believe this is why I’ve been able to secure a number of endorsements – they’re an acknowledgment of that experience and the energy I bring to this campaign.”
These endorsements, along with a list of other endorsements Scott has received, can be viewed on the endorsements page of his campaign website, www.VoteLonnie.com.

YPSILANTI – 54th State House seat candidate Lonnie Scott applauded today’s decision by the Obama Administration to provide $161 million for an environmental clean up at former General Motors plants in Michigan, including the now-closed Willow Run plant.
“Today’s announcement is a victory for both the Washtenaw County economy and the local environment,“ Scott said. “With these funds, we can accelerate the YTO plant’s transition into a site that will once again provide much-needed jobs in our community.”
Opened in 1953, the plant was closed last year as part of GM’s restructuring plan, a decision opposed by Scott and other local officials.
“Although I worked hard on behalf of Representative Smith alongside local UAW, Wayne County, Washtenaw County and Ypsilanti Township officials to fight the decision to close the plant, this new plan will help us move forward, providing funds for clean ups across the state of Michigan, including areas such as ours that have been hit the hardest by the recession,” said Scott.
“I look forward to the day when this historic site will once again serve as a source of jobs for workers in our community.” Said Scott, “Hopefully these funds will accelerate that process.”

YPSILANTI – Today Lonnie Scott announced that he would offer citizens of the 54th district a chance for casual conversation about politics in the comfort of their own home.
“I believe that there are many people in our district who care deeply about the issues facing our State and community.” Said Scott, “I am happy to go and talk to anyone in the district who wants to discuss current events and I believe people are generally most comfortable in their own home.”
The campaign has announced that an interactive page on Scott’s website, http://votelonnie.com/about-lonnie/meet-lonnie, will allow individuals or groups to submit a request for Lonnie to attend a house party. Lonnie will spend a minimum of 30 minutes with the guests discussing any issues that residents are interested in. The campaign suggests that there be a minimum of 5 people in attendance, but all requests will be considered. Groups wishing to invite Lonnie to events will also be able to use the form. The campaign will schedule as many events as possible in the coming weeks.
“Citizens need to know that their next Representative will be knowledgeable and ready to deal with the issues facing our State on day one,” Scott said, “I am uniquely qualified to be able to do that.”
Politics at your place, a variation of traditional coffee hours, will start in January and will run through March. Those interested in hosting an event that do not have access to the Internet should contact the campaign at 734-485-9161.

Happy Holidays! I am happy to report that my campaign for State Rep. has been met by much enthusiasm and support. I have been pleased with the positive response we have received from the community and democratic activists across the State. Volunteers are signing up, donations are coming in and overall things are running very smoothly. As 2009 winds down our campaign is gearing up. This district will have a very competitive primary and supporters like you are going to be the reason that we win in August and go on to win the general election in November.
Today I need your help again. Dec. 31st is the close of books for our first financial report. Since this is our first report it will be crucial-as many will judge the campaign based on this initial indicator of support. A donation of ANY size will help us show that we have a broad base of supporters. Please visit: http://votelonnie.com/contribute today and make a donation!
You may remember that I recently launched an education fundraiser. A donation of only $12 will show that you think education should be a priority for Michigan. For more information about this program please visit: http://votelonnie.com/education-12.
We will have some very exciting announcements coming in the first few weeks of January so please stay tuned! I appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you all on the campaign trail.
Wishing you a happy and safe Holiday season,
Lonnie and the campaign team
